Sinossi
A soli 100 km oltre la linea di Karman, il confine tangibile tra la terra e l’infinito spazio cosmico, si trova una piccola cittadina nel cuore del sud Italia: Grottaglie.
A Grottaglie, nonostante chi dica che non accada mai nulla, accadono molte cose: si realizzano opere in ceramica, si coltiva prelibata uva da tavola, e l’aria si mescola con il fumo di vecchie automobili incendiate.
Come se non bastasse, nell’agosto del 2017, il Dipartimento di Stato americano ha approvato il piano per la costruzione, sul suolo grottagliese, del primo spazioporto europeo. “Un passo essenziale per consentire al Paese di realizzare un accesso autonomo allo spazio”, scrivono i giornali nazionali.
Giorgio e Dario, fondatori del collettivo artistico Sano/Sano, non rimangono indifferenti di fronte a quell’annuncio: “il Paese avrà accesso allo Spazio”.
Ma di quale Paese si parlava? I grottagliesi avrebbero davvero potuto vivere l’esperienza di un viaggio suborbitale? Queste domande iniziano ad invadere le loro menti.
Capiscono che è giunto il momento di sognare in grande, di indossare caschi spaziali e di portare coloro che abitano le strade di Grottaglie a fare un salto oltre i confini terrestri.
Nasce “2021”: un progetto intento ad eliminare le distanze tra la Terra e il cielo.
Mentre le promesse delle istituzioni fanno fatica a decollare, la nuova avventura firmata Sano/sano prende slancio. La spinta per il decollo proviene dal basso, proprio da chi, dello Spazio, prima di quel momento non ne ha mai sentito parlare.
Sotto la supervisione del maestro Deni, volontari e amici del duo sfidano la torrida estate per portare a termine una missione straordinaria: costruire un razzo e formare un equipaggio pronto a partire.
Ad osservare questo lungo viaggio dalla propria camera da letto c’è Emanuele, impaziente di poter vedere anche lui la luna da vicino, e il cui cammino, a un certo punto, si intreccerà con quello di Giorgio e Dario. Non solo perché i tre si ritroveranno insieme sulla stessa strada, ancora una volta, sotto le stelle; ma anche perché ciascuno di loro, come accade di solito a chi si trova a contatto con l’infinito, è costretto a fare i conti con i limiti del proprio di spazio, limiti, che a Emanuele, Giorgio e Dario non sono mai andati a genio.
“Spazzi, una comunità in suborbita” racconta di confini che vengono spazzati via: di amicizie che vincono lo spazio e il tempo, di razzi di cartapesta che spiccano il volo, di quel “Paese” che dal sud Italia riesce a sfiorare l’universo.

Just 100 kilometers beyond the Kármán line, the tangible border between Earth and the infinite cosmos, lies a small town in the heart of southern Italy: Grottaglie.
In Grottaglie, despite what some may say about nothing ever happening, many things do actually occur: ceramic artworks are crafted, delicious table grapes are cultivated, and the air blends with the smoke of old burnt-out cars. As if that were not enough, in August 2017, the US State Department approved the plan for the construction, on the soil of Grottaglie, of the first European spaceport. “An essential step to allow the Country to achieve autonomous access to space,” the national newspapers write. Giorgio and Dario, founders of the artistic collective Sano/Sano, are not indifferent to that announcement: “the Country will have access to Space.” But which country were they talking about? Could the people of Grottaglie really experience a suborbital journey? These questions begin to invade their minds. They understand that the time has come to dream big, to wear space helmets, and to take those who live in the streets of Grottaglie beyond the terrestrial boundaries. Thus, “2021” is born: a project aimed at eliminating the distances between the Earth and the sky. While the promises of the institutions struggle to take off, the new adventure signed by Sano/sano gains momentum. The push for the launch comes from below, precisely from those who, until that moment, had never heard of Space. Under the supervision of master Deni, volunteers and friends of the duo challenge the scorching summer to complete an extraordinary mission: to build a rocket and form a crew ready to depart. Observing this long journey from his own bedroom is Emanuele, eager to see the moon up close, and whose path, at a certain point, will intersect with that of Giorgio and Dario. Not only because the three will find themselves together on the same road, once again, under the stars; but also because each of them, as usually happens to those who are attracted to the infinite, is forced to reckon with the limits of their own space, limits, which Emanuele, Giorgio, and Dario have never liked that much.
“SPAZZI – a community in suborbit” tells of boundaries being swept away: of friendships that overcome space and time, of papier-mâché rockets that take flight, of that “Country” that from southern Italy is capable of touching the universe.
